Second Chances: rescue dogs of madison county

Second Chances: Rescue Dogs of Madison County is a result of collaboration between renowned author, Donna Castellano and photographer Doug Brewster.  The book features 36 stories of rescue dogs and celebrates their rescue experiences and their forever families.  With book design by Leslie Franklin and Diane Strickland, this will be an edition everyone will want to acquire for their own collection.

The proceeds from the book project will be used as seed money for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art shelter and the future home of the Greater Huntsville Humane Society.

This is a great idea for fundraisers of all types. The title and the concept could easily be duplicated across all regions of the country.

(louie)

The book is case bound and smyth sewn with a printed dust jacket, printed end sheets and white headbands to match the body of the book. Its 4 color process throughout; 146 pages in total. The design is easy to read and the photography is outstanding! We produced 6,000 books. The retail price of the book is $30.00. Great project for a very worthy cause.

Here is Elvis’ story:

(elvis)

Everyone always asks him the same question. When you are a hound dog and someone names you Elvis, everyone assumes you are a fan of that song. You know the one. But this Elvis, the rescued hound dog, dances to the beat of another tune.

Jacqy Stone was not looking for a dog when she found Elvis. While at Bridge Street on a Saturday morning, she popped in Anthropologie to check out the latest fashions. She noticed a rescue organization, Peace, Love and Animals from Tanner Alabama, with dogs and cats available for adoption. She walked over and a volunteer told Jacqy they had a hound dog named Elvis who would be a perfect pet. She laughed. Hound dog? Elvis? She had to meet him. Standing there, petting the scared, skinny dog, her heart began to melt. In spite of herself, she began to feel a connection to the dog.

At first, she thought he would be the perfect dog for a friend, but the friend declined the offer. Elvis stayed on her mind. She and her husband, Gregg, had two dogs. While Gregg loved them dearly, there was no denying the dogs belonged to Jacqy. Jacqy thought Elvis might be the perfect companion for Gregg. She mentioned Elvis to Gregg, and they went out to the Tanner rescue shelter to meet the hound dog.

They discovered Elvis had been displaced in the tornadoes of April 2011. In spite of everyone’s best effort, his owners had not claimed him. He was skinny, not quite 37 pounds but smart and full of energy. Before Jacqy and Gregg could even consider adopting the dog they insisted that the rescue organization try once more to find the original owners. And they needed Elvis to meet Bandit and Foster, their other dogs.

After these meetings went well, and the original owners still had not claimed him, Jacqy and Gregg brought Elvis home. As Jacqy hoped, Elvis immediately bonded with Gregg. Now a robust 55 pounds, Elvis chases and trees squirrels, goes on runs and hikes with the Stones – and in typical hound dog fashion keeps his nose to the ground, trying to pick up the scent of his next squirrel. Elvis is still fearful of storms and loud noises, a response triggered by his memories of the tornado. But, Jacqy laughs, “He is not afraid of anything else!”

Marymount California University Signage and Banners

Marymount California University is an independent, Catholic, coeducational and residential university with two of its three campuses located in Southern California. The Oceanview campus in Rancho Palos Verdes encompasses 26-acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island and Trump National Golf Club. The other Southern California campus is the Waterfront Campus in San Pedro. The University's third campus site is in Northern California near Clear Lake in Lucerne.  There are Residential Communities in San Pedro with the largest near Palos Verdes Drive North and Western Avenue.

In 2013, Marymount College announced it was changing its name to Marymount California University (MCU) to "reflect the gradual transformation of the 45-year-old institution of higher education to a future multisite institution with undergraduate and graduate programs."

The name change required revised monument signage, new way finding signage, sign maintenance and new parking lot pole banners. With great intentions all around, ultimately the schedule allowed just 3 weeks for project completion. The university furnished the new logo artwork and the banner artwork; the new lettering was up to us to create.

The tasks:

* Strip off the old lettering, repaint and apply new lettering to the main RPV monument sign

* Strip off the old lettering, repaint and apply new lettering to 5 small monument signs used for way finding throughout the campus.

* Strip off the old lettering, repaint and apply new lettering to the main entry detail sign.

* Apply new lettering to four doors.

* Print and install 25 new two-sided parking lot banners located throughout campus

* Strip off the old lettering, and apply new lettering to the SP residential campus monument sign

* Print and install a new three piece fence banner that welcomes students to the RPV campus from the new parking lot.

With any project there are always little challenges that arise. And so we begin:

Below are before and after pictures of the main RPV monument sign. The first challenge was selecting a solid vinyl color that matched the new University logo style guide. The blue was pretty close; the available dark grays weren’t dark enough, so we used a matte black. The second challenge was an eleventh hour administration request to insure the new street address lettering met current LA County Fire Department signage size codes (3”).  And the large lettering certainly could have clashed with the new logo. Once we decided to use a medium gray for the street address the next step was to strip off the old lettering and repaint the sign. All of the RPV monument signs were in need of paint; rust was starting to progress and it made no sense to apply new lettering over old paint.

What we didn’t expect was 5” of water inside the main RPV entry sign. We have no idea how it got there. There were no obvious seam leaks. We’re sure glad the head of campus operations was there to see the water flowing after we drilled several drain holes. He shot a video of the water; I don't think anyone would have believed us. Once the water retreated, the surface was repaired, sanded and ready for primer. A two-tone paint scheme was in keeping with the previous theme. (note for DIY'ers: due to standing water there is no way to know the extent of any internal rust or corrosion).

The five smaller monument signs required similar sanding and painting to make them look nice. One sign required a bit more extensive repair; we removed that sign and brought it back to the shop for a "tune-up".

(this particular sign had been hit by vehicles, dented and needed to be re-secured in the ground)

(results of refurbishing)

When a project like this is started, a picture of each sign with the accompanying verbiage should be taken. It's important to take notes of the existing lettering height, font style, color and location; then the lettering will need to be re-type set and proofed. A straight shot picture is the best; no angles.
The main detail sign required some small repair and repainting; the approval process took a bit longer due to a new parking lot. We managed to paint and install the lettering just before students arrived back to campus for the fall.

The main monument sign at the residential campus presented us with another challenge. This is City of Los Angeles Fire Department jurisdiction; they have different rules for street address signage than the County Fire Department. The existing street address was 1-3/4” tall and completely inadequate and unreadable from the street. Based on the distance from the street, the formula from The City of Los Angeles regulations requires a 4” tall street address. This sign uses a different construction method as the main RPV sign, it has a brushed aluminum surface. As you can see from the below pictures, the 4” tall address tends to graphically overwhelm the existing sign. The end result works and the sign provides directions for emergency personnel and visitors alike.  If this sign eventually needs replacing, a larger sign would look better; balancing the size of the street address against the logo and sign edges. This example shows why the street address lettering size as directed by the Fire Department might influence the size of a new sign or its location.

Next on the agenda were 25 new parking lot pole banners to replace the ones I installed two years ago. Had these banners not required replacement due to the name change, the old banners would have lasted another season providing Marymount with a three year life span. I used a different vendor for the pole banners because I feel a long term banner should remain fade free. Outdoor fade free printing can only be accomplished with the UV printing process. Once the banners were printed, a one day install was all that was required for the 25 banners. Our installation crews are insured and licensed which is important to avoid liability issues.

 (Old banner)

Thrown into the mix: replace two bulletin boards with new surfaces.

Lastly there was the 3 fence banners that were installed to welcome new students and visitors to Marymount as they enter from the new rear parking lot. These were simple one sided UV printed banners (mounted back to back) that will be relatively fade free over three years. I ran a wind load calculation on the largest of the three; with a 30 knot wind, the fence would experience a side load of 90 pounds. The fence should be adequate. (There are future plans for a permanent monument sign for this area).

Overall this was a fun project, the stakeholders are great to work with and I see the results every weekend during my bike ride past the campus.

Unique Holiday gift

I recently developed this idea through a request from one of my music label customers. What’s really unique is the high quality short-run color reproduction, it's just not available using any other method.

(this concept utilizes a solid top option: various images + 2 images courtesy of photographer Aaron Chang)

The custom rigid box option presents a keepsake feel and of course safe storage in the off season.
And I wanted the manufacturing to be domestic.

Ornaments make a great gift and appeal to consumers seeking emotional attachment to family, holidays and previous vacations. If the 36 boxes of decorations in my garage is any sign, ornaments become collectable and cherished.

I think this idea can work on several levels:
  • Photographers; an alternative to a book or print at a lower price point
  • Vacation remembrance
  • Destination premium for Visitors bureau
  • Concept; ie classic cars, antique images or famous people
  • Event celebration
  • Non-profit development gift showcasing how the funds are used
  • Contest - the best images are reproduced
  • Perpetual collections
  • Commercial level (provided it’s not simply an advertisement)

(idea for leading motorcycle rental company, EagleRider. Vacation celebration. Clear top option)
Details:
  • Unmatched ornament decoration and custom packaging equals a great value
  • Photo realism unmatched by conventional decoration methods
  • If you offer direct sales on your website, it’s perfect for pre-orders
  • Individual numbering is available which is VERY attractive to the collectors market
  • Offer a photo contest on your website, best 4 photos are reproduced
  • A live high quality and predictable proof prior to production
  • Domestically manufactured for shorter lead times * Low entry cost for limited quantity orders
The entire package includes:
  • High quality rigid colored box with a clear imprinted top or a fully wrapped top for the ultimate in storage protection
  • Four custom printed 4-color ornaments with great color detail set in a black chip support structure.
  • Large selection of ornament base color (even black!)
  • Domestically manufactured (the decorated globe originates from overseas)

I can produce as few as 250 units. The unit costs start working better at 500 units and above.
For questions or more information, call me. I'd love to hear your feedback.

Rigid setup boxes

When your product deserves to be showcased, a rigid setup box may be your choice.

Rigid setup boxes will enhance the image and value of your products. Products
packaged in rigid set up boxes are often considered of higher quality and from
better companies. Because they are sturdy, easy to open and close, great for storage,
require no set up and can incorporate high-end graphics, rigid boxes are used for
distinguished products. Rigid setup boxes have no rough edges, no tabs to tuck or
insert. They are sleek, uniform, and resilient, even after many openings.

Rigid setup boxes are typically used to package retail-oriented products such as gifts,
stationery, greeting cards, liquor, multimedia box sets, cosmetics and skin care,
candles, jewelry, specialty food and gift cards. They can also be used to protect
and hold books.

Rigid setup boxes are generally two pieces, a lid and a base. They are fully telescoping
or have a shorter lid (semi telescoping). They can be wrapped in printed sheets, or an
exotic specialty material. Decorating can include laminating, UV coating, foil stamping,
debossing and finish die cutting. Custom rigid set-up boxes have lower minimums as
compared to folding chipboard boxes and can be wrapped in many different colors.

Rigid setup boxes can be designed with special inserts made up of paperboard, plastic
and foam to firmly secure your product inside.

Rigid set-up boxes are called “rigid” boxes for a reason. They’re strong, durable and
non-collapsible which offers protection for your products. Because of their durability
and elegance, customers often keep, save and re-purpose them. When you’re looking for
retail protection, a set-up box is the way to go. RSUB are made of .030 pt. paperboard
and for added strength, the chip can be increased .050 pt. paperboard or heavier.

No assembly is required for a RSUB. No one spends countless minutes or even hours
fumbling with folding and assembling. Labor costs for packing your products will be
remarkably reduced. However, because they’re fully assembled and non-collapsible,
RSUB do require space.

Box and lid styles:

Book boxes are a unique specialty box that allows your customer to store your product
on a book shelf. A book box typically has a glued tray which turns into an actual
book cover. Software, Bio-tech, Toys and Exercise DVD products sell well utilizing this style.

Hinge box: adding a hinge can turn a standard set-up box into a presentation. There are
several styles of hinges available. Personal products, toys and gift products utilize hinge boxes.

Neck boxes (aka shoulder boxes) are three-piece specialty boxes where the lid and
bottom do not telescope, or overlap. They "kiss" together or never touch each other.
The inner neck, which can be a set-up tray, a glued sleeve, or a platform, is glued or
friction-locked into the bottom of the box. The inner neck's function is to guide and
hold the lid in place when this box is closed. Candles, perfume, and diffuser with weighted product packages work well with this style.

Slide boxes or matchbook boxes are two-piece boxes with an outer sliding sleeve and an inner “tray”. They can have flush ends where the sleeve is flush to the tray or can leave a reveal, imparting a bit of elegance.

Hinged Lid: A hinged lid with an embedded magnetic catch is commonly used in repeated use packaging such as media boxes or instrument boxes. Easy to open, use, load, and store hinged lids are ideal for boxes that are used for vanity or workbench storage units.

Partial Telescope: Any lid that goes down the base more than 1”, but not the full depth of the base, is a partial telescope lid. Common examples of a partial telescope lid are jewelry box lids and candle box lids. Many jewelry boxes are 1” deep with a 5/8” lid. Some candle boxes are 2-3/4” deep with a 1-3/4” lid. Partial telescope lids are also commonly seen on gift boxes and higher-end product boxes. They offer both charm and practicality to provide a box that’s beautiful, yet easy to open.

Shoebox Lid: a shoebox lid is always 1” deep regardless of the base size. The most common example is an actual shoe box lid. Shoes are often stored and sold in a box that consists of a base that is around 4” deep, and a lid that is only 1” deep. Shoebox lids offer easy opening, and are perfect for boxes that are opened and closed frequently.

Telescope lid covers the entire base regardless of the base size. A common example of a telescope lid is a candy box lid. Most every box of chocolates has a telescope lid. Telescope lids are perfect when you want a little more protection, and the box is not going to be opened and closed several times. If you like the look of the telescope lid, but know that the box will be opened and closed frequently, ask for “thumb notches” or “thumb holes”.

Specialty Lids: V-Shaped lids, angled lids are examples of unusual lid styles.

Size ranges for setup boxes: Your box can be as small as 1"W x 1"L x ½"D, or as large as 30"W x 30"L x 12"D. So, it doesn’t matter if your product is a small rare coin or a pair of Shaq’s shoes. Notwithstanding, standard depth is between 1-5 inches. Keep in mind that depths greater than 5 inches require extensive hand labor, and can make your boxes more expensive.

Decorating rigid setup boxes:

Paper choices are almost infinite. Paper can be embossed or smooth, solid or patterned, matte or gloss, white one side or colored clear through. Various textures such as suede, metal, and snakeskin are also possible. Foil and holographic papers are another way to add flare. White paper can be flood printed to match any pantone color you provide. Need more options:

Foil papers offer elegance and depth. When your box needs a classy or delicate look, plain or embossed foil papers are a good choice. Available in many colors, embossing patterns, and finishes, bright foils add a clean, modern look while dull foils will make your set-up box look soft and delicate. Acrylic latex paper has a unique and sensual appeal. Its soft matte finish provides a look of understated elegance and sophistication while the rose-petal softness of its surface begs to be touched. It’s ideal for applications requiring tactile richness coupled with strength.

Embossed Paper: Whether you choose gloss or matte, you can select an embossed paper. Choose embossed paper for high-end products. Linen, Leather, Crocodile and Ribbed are just a few of the hundreds of embossing patterns available. Embossed paper can take a setup box from beautiful to exquisite.

Specialty Papers: Choose specialty papers to give your customer a hint of what’s inside or just for fun. Foil paper, kid’s designs, patriotic, floral, stripes, polka dots…the possibilities are endless. Paper that looks like metal; paper that feels like suede; paper that looks and feels like snakeskin; you are only limited by your own imagination. When combining theme and patterned papers you can create a unique appearance to your setup box that will add eye appeal and distinction for your products.

Don’t forget about the inside of your box. Compliment that perfect wrapping paper with the perfect interior board color for an always classy appearance. If you want a specific inside color, a standard colored sheet or a custom printed sheet can be mounted to the chip.

Offset lithographic printing adds graphics to your set-up box. From one color line art to rich four-color photographic images can be produced on your setup box. You can print just the top of the lid or flood the entire lid and base. Looking for a cost effective way to reproduce your four-color photographic image? Print the entire telescope lid, and wrap the base in a solid white sheet.

Foil stamping is a cost effective way to say what you want to say and say it with distinction. Stamping has its own unique look that printing cannot emulate. Stamping also adds flare for high-end products. Choose foils for a vibrant, sophisticated look. Choose non foils for a softer, more subtle style.

Embossing: For an elegant, and timeless look, raise your graphics through embossing. Foil stamp and then emboss or leave it “blind”, the term for embossing patterns that are left unstamped and uncolored. Embossing signals to your customers that something stylish is just under the lid.

Coatings not only make the graphics look better, they offer a layer of protection so you don’t have to worry about ink fading or smearing when the boxes are frequently handled. Choices of coatings include Varnish, Aqueous, spot UV, and film lamination. For most one- and two-color line logos, varnish offers enough protection to prevent smudging. Heavier print coverage can usually be protected by aqueous coating which is a harder coating that also adds a nice sheen to your graphics. UV coating provides the best protection, and really makes your graphics pop with a shine comparable to glass or acrylic.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on graphics. It’s what sets your box apart from your competitor’s. When done right, graphics offer brand recognition, so that your customers immediately recognize your name and logo, and therefore, your products.

Laminating or printing the interior of your setup box: Why stop on the outside of your box? The inside of your box can be laminated as well. This special touch offers class and adds finesse. Graphics can also be printed on the inside of your box; such as game rules or instructions, so you’ll have no paper inserts to print.

Specialty rigid setup boxes
Velvet insert trays, ribbon pulls, loose wrap, magnet closures, and die cut patterns are just a few of the ways you can enhance your rigid setup box to create a style that’s unique to your product and company.

A New Spin on the Ice Cream sandwich

Over time, the Strand has been wheelin’ in the years and just begging for a tasty alternative to the typical beach front eats. Having recently rolled into town is The Manhattan Beach Creamery ‘wich provides 28 different a-la carte ice cream flavors available daily (and more seasonally). This is not your grandmother’s vanilla candy store; in addition to ice cream, they make custom cupcakes, sell candy and their specialty, the cream’wich!

This is what their website says about their cream’wich:
"The cream’wich begins with a signature cookie. This is what sets the cream’wich apart from the rest. Our chocolate chip cookies are fresh-baked daily, using a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. All ice cream is artisan made from scratch in small batches using only the best quality ingredients. Every cream’wich is hand crafted at the Manhattan Beach Creamery with careful attention to each detail. Chill out and enjoy local!"

We were tasked with decorating these sweet stainless steel insulated cream’wich carts. The brand new carts (furnished by the customer) rolled into our shop, and required some dis-assembly spin before we could apply the graphics. Wheels had to be removed along with some additional hardware. Since durability was a concern, we recommended applying the graphics on a panel-by-panel basis which drastically increased the fun. This would give the customer the flexibility to replace a single graphics panel if it was damaged during usage.

We used 3M Controltac with the matching 3M over-lam film, thus protecting this gastronomical signage endeavor. This is the same high quality material we use for car graphics, just more tasty. Once the graphics were applied, the carts were re-assembled.

The client’s design allows space for safely applying a repositionable graphic on top of the Controltac for seasonal, flavor or special offers. The repositionable label is a great solution for adding marketing flexibility to the cart design.

This was a “tasty” project on ‘wich to work and the end result is nothing but charming!
If you have a project in which 3V Signs and Graphics can help you sweeten your branding and advertising goals, please let me know. You’ll receive the same level of sugary delicious service Manhattan Beach Creamery received!

I just finished this short run invitation and envelope for Project GRAD LA’s annual
scholarship celebration event. This is a consistently attended intimate event taking
place at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Theater. Although smaller and
less complex of a project than I normally discuss, I really enjoy working with
the organization and their designer, Durre Design. I especially like the
organization’s goals, which are outlined below.

It’s a short run of 400 invites and 400 envelopes. The invite was engineered to print
work and tumble (one set of plates to save costs) using 3 PMS colors on both sides
on 100# Classic Crest Cover paper. The different values of the PMS colors make for
an easy-to-read yet eye catching spread interwoven with the faces of several
Project GRAD students. The invite was printed on a 5/c 14x20 press particularly suited
for such a short run. After printing, a gloss foil stamp in the shape of a graduation
cap was applied to the face and a final die score was added to insure a clean fold.

The envelope is an 80# Classic Crest pre-formed A7 envelope printed in 2 PMS colors.
Although only two colors were used, the various screen value mixes provides an
appearance of more than just 2 colors. The end result is a very handsome
outgoing envelope. The RSVP function is traditional (phone or email).

Project GRAD Los Angeles focuses on helping the children of the low-income,
Northeast San Fernando Valley prepare for college success.

Another sold out Collection!

On Tuesday Concord Music Group/Rounder Records released a limited edition
(10,000 units) of the Duane Allman 7 CD retrospective collection.

(Please read today’s FREE Golden Nugget marketing idea at the end of this email !!!..)

We love collaborating with CMG; from the McCartney RAM project you’ve seen
in the past to this Duane Allman collection, CMG is giving fans and collectors value.

There are 6 classic rock releases this month. I want to review some numbers
with you for sales comparison:

3 releases are a single CD. (Hendrix, Bowie and Clapton)
3 releases are box sets:
* Eagles (Elektra/Asylum): 6 CDs on Amazon for $28.00
* Stills (Rhino): 4 CDs on Amazon for $44.00
* Allman (CMG/Rounder): 7 CDs on Amazon for $117.00 (retail $140.00)

Clearly CMG knows well executed limited editions command a significantly higher price point.

On to the specifics about this package. As you review the CMG unboxing video below, you’ll see the various elements that were added to enhance the package.

The package starts by opening the shrink wrap with an “onsert” explaining the contents.

* Outer box is litho printed and turned edge construction including a scuff free film
lamination.
* Inside is a gold crushed velvet that simulates the inside of a guitar case.
* A 72 page + cover perfect bound book (PUR glue binding btw!).
* Sky Dog sticker printed on vinyl using UV inks (suitable for car bumpers).
* Fender medium pick. I guess CMG felt a metal slide would be a bit over the top.
* The video doesn’t show the two “pull” ribbons that help release the 7 CDs.
* Individual CD sleeves are designed to look like guitar string packaging and they do! 7 different colors (via 4CP) on a translucent vellum.

The booklet, sticker and onsert were printed here; the outer box and sleeves were produced at ICLA’s overseas factory. All the components were delivered to Terra Haute (Sony) for final inserting and fulfillment.

PS: Concord Music Group uses their promotional YouTube channel to effectively market the Duane Allman package. 11,000 views in a week. Electra/Asylum doesn’t have a YouTube channel....Can your product be effectively marketed on YouTube?
Something to consider.
