Rigid setup boxes

When your product deserves to be showcased, a rigid setup box may be your choice.

Rigid setup boxes will enhance the image and value of your products. Products
packaged in rigid set up boxes are often considered of higher quality and from
better companies. Because they are sturdy, easy to open and close, great for storage,
require no set up and can incorporate high-end graphics, rigid boxes are used for
distinguished products. Rigid setup boxes have no rough edges, no tabs to tuck or
insert. They are sleek, uniform, and resilient, even after many openings.

Rigid setup boxes are typically used to package retail-oriented products such as gifts,
stationery, greeting cards, liquor, multimedia box sets, cosmetics and skin care,
candles, jewelry, specialty food and gift cards. They can also be used to protect
and hold books.

Rigid setup boxes are generally two pieces, a lid and a base. They are fully telescoping
or have a shorter lid (semi telescoping). They can be wrapped in printed sheets, or an
exotic specialty material. Decorating can include laminating, UV coating, foil stamping,
debossing and finish die cutting. Custom rigid set-up boxes have lower minimums as
compared to folding chipboard boxes and can be wrapped in many different colors.

Rigid setup boxes can be designed with special inserts made up of paperboard, plastic
and foam to firmly secure your product inside.

Rigid set-up boxes are called “rigid” boxes for a reason. They’re strong, durable and
non-collapsible which offers protection for your products. Because of their durability
and elegance, customers often keep, save and re-purpose them. When you’re looking for
retail protection, a set-up box is the way to go. RSUB are made of .030 pt. paperboard
and for added strength, the chip can be increased .050 pt. paperboard or heavier.

No assembly is required for a RSUB. No one spends countless minutes or even hours
fumbling with folding and assembling. Labor costs for packing your products will be
remarkably reduced. However, because they’re fully assembled and non-collapsible,
RSUB do require space.

Box and lid styles:

Book boxes are a unique specialty box that allows your customer to store your product
on a book shelf. A book box typically has a glued tray which turns into an actual
book cover. Software, Bio-tech, Toys and Exercise DVD products sell well utilizing this style.

Hinge box: adding a hinge can turn a standard set-up box into a presentation. There are
several styles of hinges available. Personal products, toys and gift products utilize hinge boxes.

Neck boxes (aka shoulder boxes) are three-piece specialty boxes where the lid and
bottom do not telescope, or overlap. They "kiss" together or never touch each other.
The inner neck, which can be a set-up tray, a glued sleeve, or a platform, is glued or
friction-locked into the bottom of the box. The inner neck's function is to guide and
hold the lid in place when this box is closed. Candles, perfume, and diffuser with weighted product packages work well with this style.

Slide boxes or matchbook boxes are two-piece boxes with an outer sliding sleeve and an inner “tray”. They can have flush ends where the sleeve is flush to the tray or can leave a reveal, imparting a bit of elegance.

Hinged Lid: A hinged lid with an embedded magnetic catch is commonly used in repeated use packaging such as media boxes or instrument boxes. Easy to open, use, load, and store hinged lids are ideal for boxes that are used for vanity or workbench storage units.

Partial Telescope: Any lid that goes down the base more than 1”, but not the full depth of the base, is a partial telescope lid. Common examples of a partial telescope lid are jewelry box lids and candle box lids. Many jewelry boxes are 1” deep with a 5/8” lid. Some candle boxes are 2-3/4” deep with a 1-3/4” lid. Partial telescope lids are also commonly seen on gift boxes and higher-end product boxes. They offer both charm and practicality to provide a box that’s beautiful, yet easy to open.

Shoebox Lid: a shoebox lid is always 1” deep regardless of the base size. The most common example is an actual shoe box lid. Shoes are often stored and sold in a box that consists of a base that is around 4” deep, and a lid that is only 1” deep. Shoebox lids offer easy opening, and are perfect for boxes that are opened and closed frequently.

Telescope lid covers the entire base regardless of the base size. A common example of a telescope lid is a candy box lid. Most every box of chocolates has a telescope lid. Telescope lids are perfect when you want a little more protection, and the box is not going to be opened and closed several times. If you like the look of the telescope lid, but know that the box will be opened and closed frequently, ask for “thumb notches” or “thumb holes”.

Specialty Lids: V-Shaped lids, angled lids are examples of unusual lid styles.

Size ranges for setup boxes: Your box can be as small as 1"W x 1"L x ½"D, or as large as 30"W x 30"L x 12"D. So, it doesn’t matter if your product is a small rare coin or a pair of Shaq’s shoes. Notwithstanding, standard depth is between 1-5 inches. Keep in mind that depths greater than 5 inches require extensive hand labor, and can make your boxes more expensive.

Decorating rigid setup boxes:

Paper choices are almost infinite. Paper can be embossed or smooth, solid or patterned, matte or gloss, white one side or colored clear through. Various textures such as suede, metal, and snakeskin are also possible. Foil and holographic papers are another way to add flare. White paper can be flood printed to match any pantone color you provide. Need more options:

Foil papers offer elegance and depth. When your box needs a classy or delicate look, plain or embossed foil papers are a good choice. Available in many colors, embossing patterns, and finishes, bright foils add a clean, modern look while dull foils will make your set-up box look soft and delicate. Acrylic latex paper has a unique and sensual appeal. Its soft matte finish provides a look of understated elegance and sophistication while the rose-petal softness of its surface begs to be touched. It’s ideal for applications requiring tactile richness coupled with strength.

Embossed Paper: Whether you choose gloss or matte, you can select an embossed paper. Choose embossed paper for high-end products. Linen, Leather, Crocodile and Ribbed are just a few of the hundreds of embossing patterns available. Embossed paper can take a setup box from beautiful to exquisite.

Specialty Papers: Choose specialty papers to give your customer a hint of what’s inside or just for fun. Foil paper, kid’s designs, patriotic, floral, stripes, polka dots…the possibilities are endless. Paper that looks like metal; paper that feels like suede; paper that looks and feels like snakeskin; you are only limited by your own imagination. When combining theme and patterned papers you can create a unique appearance to your setup box that will add eye appeal and distinction for your products.

Don’t forget about the inside of your box. Compliment that perfect wrapping paper with the perfect interior board color for an always classy appearance. If you want a specific inside color, a standard colored sheet or a custom printed sheet can be mounted to the chip.

Offset lithographic printing adds graphics to your set-up box. From one color line art to rich four-color photographic images can be produced on your setup box. You can print just the top of the lid or flood the entire lid and base. Looking for a cost effective way to reproduce your four-color photographic image? Print the entire telescope lid, and wrap the base in a solid white sheet.

Foil stamping is a cost effective way to say what you want to say and say it with distinction. Stamping has its own unique look that printing cannot emulate. Stamping also adds flare for high-end products. Choose foils for a vibrant, sophisticated look. Choose non foils for a softer, more subtle style.

Embossing: For an elegant, and timeless look, raise your graphics through embossing. Foil stamp and then emboss or leave it “blind”, the term for embossing patterns that are left unstamped and uncolored. Embossing signals to your customers that something stylish is just under the lid.

Coatings not only make the graphics look better, they offer a layer of protection so you don’t have to worry about ink fading or smearing when the boxes are frequently handled. Choices of coatings include Varnish, Aqueous, spot UV, and film lamination. For most one- and two-color line logos, varnish offers enough protection to prevent smudging. Heavier print coverage can usually be protected by aqueous coating which is a harder coating that also adds a nice sheen to your graphics. UV coating provides the best protection, and really makes your graphics pop with a shine comparable to glass or acrylic.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on graphics. It’s what sets your box apart from your competitor’s. When done right, graphics offer brand recognition, so that your customers immediately recognize your name and logo, and therefore, your products.

Laminating or printing the interior of your setup box: Why stop on the outside of your box? The inside of your box can be laminated as well. This special touch offers class and adds finesse. Graphics can also be printed on the inside of your box; such as game rules or instructions, so you’ll have no paper inserts to print.

Specialty rigid setup boxes
Velvet insert trays, ribbon pulls, loose wrap, magnet closures, and die cut patterns are just a few of the ways you can enhance your rigid setup box to create a style that’s unique to your product and company.

A New Spin on the Ice Cream sandwich

Over time, the Strand has been wheelin’ in the years and just begging for a tasty alternative to the typical beach front eats. Having recently rolled into town is The Manhattan Beach Creamery ‘wich provides 28 different a-la carte ice cream flavors available daily (and more seasonally). This is not your grandmother’s vanilla candy store; in addition to ice cream, they make custom cupcakes, sell candy and their specialty, the cream’wich!

This is what their website says about their cream’wich:
"The cream’wich begins with a signature cookie. This is what sets the cream’wich apart from the rest. Our chocolate chip cookies are fresh-baked daily, using a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. All ice cream is artisan made from scratch in small batches using only the best quality ingredients. Every cream’wich is hand crafted at the Manhattan Beach Creamery with careful attention to each detail. Chill out and enjoy local!"

We were tasked with decorating these sweet stainless steel insulated cream’wich carts. The brand new carts (furnished by the customer) rolled into our shop, and required some dis-assembly spin before we could apply the graphics. Wheels had to be removed along with some additional hardware. Since durability was a concern, we recommended applying the graphics on a panel-by-panel basis which drastically increased the fun. This would give the customer the flexibility to replace a single graphics panel if it was damaged during usage.

We used 3M Controltac with the matching 3M over-lam film, thus protecting this gastronomical signage endeavor. This is the same high quality material we use for car graphics, just more tasty. Once the graphics were applied, the carts were re-assembled.

The client’s design allows space for safely applying a repositionable graphic on top of the Controltac for seasonal, flavor or special offers. The repositionable label is a great solution for adding marketing flexibility to the cart design.

This was a “tasty” project on ‘wich to work and the end result is nothing but charming!
If you have a project in which 3V Signs and Graphics can help you sweeten your branding and advertising goals, please let me know. You’ll receive the same level of sugary delicious service Manhattan Beach Creamery received!

I just finished this short run invitation and envelope for Project GRAD LA’s annual
scholarship celebration event. This is a consistently attended intimate event taking
place at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Theater. Although smaller and
less complex of a project than I normally discuss, I really enjoy working with
the organization and their designer, Durre Design. I especially like the
organization’s goals, which are outlined below.

It’s a short run of 400 invites and 400 envelopes. The invite was engineered to print
work and tumble (one set of plates to save costs) using 3 PMS colors on both sides
on 100# Classic Crest Cover paper. The different values of the PMS colors make for
an easy-to-read yet eye catching spread interwoven with the faces of several
Project GRAD students. The invite was printed on a 5/c 14x20 press particularly suited
for such a short run. After printing, a gloss foil stamp in the shape of a graduation
cap was applied to the face and a final die score was added to insure a clean fold.

The envelope is an 80# Classic Crest pre-formed A7 envelope printed in 2 PMS colors.
Although only two colors were used, the various screen value mixes provides an
appearance of more than just 2 colors. The end result is a very handsome
outgoing envelope. The RSVP function is traditional (phone or email).

Project GRAD Los Angeles focuses on helping the children of the low-income,
Northeast San Fernando Valley prepare for college success.

Another sold out Collection!

On Tuesday Concord Music Group/Rounder Records released a limited edition
(10,000 units) of the Duane Allman 7 CD retrospective collection.

(Please read today’s FREE Golden Nugget marketing idea at the end of this email !!!..)

We love collaborating with CMG; from the McCartney RAM project you’ve seen
in the past to this Duane Allman collection, CMG is giving fans and collectors value.

There are 6 classic rock releases this month. I want to review some numbers
with you for sales comparison:

3 releases are a single CD. (Hendrix, Bowie and Clapton)
3 releases are box sets:
* Eagles (Elektra/Asylum): 6 CDs on Amazon for $28.00
* Stills (Rhino): 4 CDs on Amazon for $44.00
* Allman (CMG/Rounder): 7 CDs on Amazon for $117.00 (retail $140.00)

Clearly CMG knows well executed limited editions command a significantly higher price point.

On to the specifics about this package. As you review the CMG unboxing video below, you’ll see the various elements that were added to enhance the package.

The package starts by opening the shrink wrap with an “onsert” explaining the contents.

* Outer box is litho printed and turned edge construction including a scuff free film
lamination.
* Inside is a gold crushed velvet that simulates the inside of a guitar case.
* A 72 page + cover perfect bound book (PUR glue binding btw!).
* Sky Dog sticker printed on vinyl using UV inks (suitable for car bumpers).
* Fender medium pick. I guess CMG felt a metal slide would be a bit over the top.
* The video doesn’t show the two “pull” ribbons that help release the 7 CDs.
* Individual CD sleeves are designed to look like guitar string packaging and they do! 7 different colors (via 4CP) on a translucent vellum.

The booklet, sticker and onsert were printed here; the outer box and sleeves were produced at ICLA’s overseas factory. All the components were delivered to Terra Haute (Sony) for final inserting and fulfillment.

PS: Concord Music Group uses their promotional YouTube channel to effectively market the Duane Allman package. 11,000 views in a week. Electra/Asylum doesn’t have a YouTube channel....Can your product be effectively marketed on YouTube?
Something to consider.

See us at the Grammys?

If you watched the Grammys on Sunday night I’m sure you heard a variety of songs, singers young and old and of course selections of music to suit tastes of all kinds. My favorite moment: An entire ensemble performing The Band’s “The Weight”. Which was your favorite?

What you didn’t see is the presentation of the Grammy for best boxed or special limited edition package (#63)OR best historical album (#65). Although twice nominated, our package, RAM-Paul McCartney Archive Collection (Concord Music), didn’t win a Grammy. You can see some of the images of the package below. At the end of this post, there is a link to our website for more images and a video of the unboxing with McCartney music in the background.

Here are a few facts: We produced in excess of 20,000 units and the entire package is currently available on Amazon.com for $77.00. The construction of the outside box is one of a compartmentalized clamshell using turned edge fabric. The fabric matched the preceding McCartney Archive books. I really like the realistic photo images (made from a stone based paper with a thick clear UV coating). Everyone’s favorite part of the package (besides the music) is the simulated hand written notes that Paul used to compose his thoughts and lyrics. We used several types of paper, all folded differently. They look like the real thing!

This project has it all; hand work, intricate printing, tight turned edge construction, unusual materials, different binding methods and some serious responsibility. We produced this package overseas, on budget and on time to three worldwide disk replication factories for final assembly (Japan, Germany and the US). If you have a complex project and need a trusted partner, look no further than Integrated Communications Los Angeles.

Of course if you are a serious McCartney fan, you need to own this collection.

Tension frames for graphic images

The image below is a project we finished a few months ago.

I want to call your attention to the clean style a “tension” type aluminum frame presents.
The frame holds the printed flexible vinyl print. This project is 16’ x 8’. The new tension
frame is attached to an existing plywood board and angle iron frame assembly.

(a before picture is also below).
I like tension style frames for several reasons:

* Once the frame is installed, the vinyl can be changed out quickly and
inexpensively to promote your seasonal message.

* Tension frames are available in a framed (shown) or frameless style depending on your
location’s needs or preference.

* The vinyl is stretched taut and presents a smooth clean surface
much like a drum surface. No wind gets behind the print;
the image remains stable and smooth.

* If your company has a maintenance crew available; a print change-out is easy to perform
once the frame has been installed. Or we can do the change out for you.

* Seasonal messages can be removed, cleaned and stored for reuse the next year.
Once you have an inventory of seasonal messages, your marketing efforts are much more
flexible and your costs drop substantially.

* The frame is custom trimmed to fit your installation size requirements.

* Tension frames can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Here is a sample of a frameless style installation:

USPS Changes the rules for self mailers

As of January 5, 2013:
CHANGES TO SELF MAILERS The United States Postal Service (USPS) will begin enforcing new design rules for "Letter" sized Self Mailers (THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE "Letter" sized envelope or postcard mail pieces).

A letter sized "Self Mailer" is a mail piece that has a fold (usually at least 2 even sized panels) and is not placed into a paper/poly envelope.

The main changes are as follows:
Old Max Size: 6.25” x 11.5”
New Size:
Minimum Size for letter size Self Mailer is now 3.5” x 5”
Max Size for letter size Self Mailer is now 6” x 10.5”

Final Fold/Spine: The final fold, when looking at the addressing area, NEEDS to be on the bottom or leading (right side) edge.

The FINAL FOLD CAN NO LONGER BE ON THE TOP WHEN LOOKING AT THE ADDRESS PANEL. If the following specs are not met, a non-machineable surcharge of $0.20 per piece will be charged in addition to the regular postage amount.

As of January 28, 2013:

POSTAGE INCREASE The USPS will raise postage rates again on January 28, 2013. For reference, a First Class single piece rate will now be $0.46 each. As for PreSorted Rates and Standard Class rates, postage rates are increasing by an average of 2.57%.

For more information about postage rates, please contact me.
